Client’s brief
The artwork should be an illustration with the Kanji letter 疼 (meaning cold or ache/pain) in the center of a square canvas, the letter can be stylized. For the illustration, the client was impressed with the artist’s previous works using loose lines and blind contour techniques, and prefers a flowy, loose feel with the use of watercolor.
The color palette includes midnight blue, dark teal, white, and crimson.
The working process
The artist interviewed the songwriter – who was also a close friend of the artist - to learn about their inspiration for writing the song, including influences like life experience and events.
Some thematical elements were observed in the song lyrics: the contrast between the inner world and the world outside, between nature and people, between the present and the past. The artist’s intention is to emphasize this contrast and dissonance within the artwork.
6 ideas were presented to the songwriter and the band to select. Option number 3 was chosen, as it was both distinctive and closely connected to the feeling of the song.
The final artwork
The artwork was done in Chinese ink and watercolor on cold-pressed paper.
It was later used in creating the lyrics video of the song.
